BLOCKED MILK DUCTS
Blocked Milk Ducts
Blocked milk ducts occur when a milk duct in the breast becomes clogged, causing localized pain, swelling, and sometimes a lump. This condition can lead to discomfort and may increase the risk of developing mastitis if not treated promptly. Physiotherapy can help by using gentle manual techniques, massage, and advice on positioning and breastfeeding strategies to promote milk flow, relieve pain, and prevent further blockages.
Physiotherapy has been proven to be extremely effective in clearing blocked milk ducts within 2-3 sessions only. If "lumps" do not clear after 24 hours of home remedies, call the clinic ASAP for an emergency appointment!
What to Expect in Physiotherapy
Your physiotherapist will assess the affected breast area and breastfeeding techniques to identify blockages and contributing factors. Treatment may include gentle manual lymphatic drainage, ultrasound therapy, advice on effective feeding positions, and exercises to improve breast drainage. You’ll also receive education on self-care strategies to prevent recurrence and support ongoing breastfeeding comfort.
Blocked milk ducts (also called clogged or plugged ducts) typically occur when milk flow is obstructed in part of the breast.
Common Contributing Factors include:
Infrequent or irregular breastfeeding/pumping – leading to milk stasis.
Poor latch or ineffective nursing – causing incomplete drainage of the breast.
Tight clothing or pressure on the breast – such as from bras, baby carriers, or sleeping positions.
Oversupply of milk – leading to engorgement and blockages.
Stress or fatigue – which can affect let-down reflex and milk flow.
Sudden weaning or skipped feedings – leading to milk buildup.
History of previous blocked ducts or mastitis – which can increase recurrence risk.
If untreated, blocked ducts can lead to mastitis, an infection of the breast tissue.
If blocked ducts do not clear after 24 hours of home remedies, call the clinic ASAP for an emergency appointment, before it turns into mastitis.
