VAGINIMUS
What is it?
Vaginismus is a condition where the vaginal muscles tighten involuntarily, making penetration, whether during intercourse, tampon use, or gynecological exams, painful or even impossible. This muscle response is often linked to fear, anxiety, or past trauma, and can occur even when a person wants to engage in these activities. With the right support, including pelvic floor physiotherapy and counseling, vaginismus is treatable and manageable.
What to expect in physiotherapy
Suggested treatment options include a combination of pelvic floor physiotherapy, relaxation techniques, gradual desensitization exercises, dilator therapy and psychological support or counseling to address any underlying emotional factors. This comprehensive approach helps reduce muscle tension, ease discomfort, and restore confidence in intimate or medical situations.
