INTERSTITIAL CYSTITIS

What is it?

Interstitial Cystitis, also known as painful bladder syndrome, is a chronic condition characterized by bladder pain, pressure, and urinary urgency or frequency without an infection. In Canada, it is estimated that IC accounts for nearly 2.8% of all outpatient urology clinic visits. The exact prevalence is challenging to determine due to variations in diagnostic criteria and underreporting. IC can significantly impact daily activities and emotional well-being.

What to expect in physiotherapy

Physiotherapy for IC aims to alleviate symptoms by addressing pelvic floor muscle dysfunction and promoting relaxation. Treatment may include pelvic floor muscle relaxation techniques, manual therapy, bladder training, and education on lifestyle modifications to reduce bladder irritation. With individualized care, many individuals experience significant symptom relief and improved bladder function.
